The Sioux track and field teams traveled to Iowa this weekend for Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open.
Women
Several Sioux women took to Indianola, Iowa for the Kip Janvrin Open where upper classmen and field events captured the top places for the team.
Junior Jessica Clausnitzer placed highest at the meet taking first in a four-way tie in the pole vault. Clausnitzer hit a provisional qualifying mark with 3.65 m.
Also leading the way is senior Nikki Dahsltrom, placing fourth in the high jump at 1.47 m. In the long jump sophomore Sara Carpenter took 15th with 5.05 m and freshman Sarah Fegley placed 18th with 4.87 m. Fegley was the top place winner in the triple jump, taking 10th with 10.66 m.
No Sioux women competed in the throwing events, an area the team has had limited numbers in all season.
Top placer in the distance events was sophomore Kristi Dahlheimer who took sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with 11.33.50. Junior Mandy Gefroh also placed in the event, taking 15th.
In the 800-meter run, sophomores Tika Baker and Lori Benke placed in both the 800 and 1500 meter runs to lead the way for the distance team.
In the hurdling events freshman Jessica Butler led the way in the 100 meter hurdles, placing 17th with 15.92 and freshman Rachel Fashant also placed (33rd, 17.34). In the 400-meter hurdles sophomore Dana Peterson led, placing 11th with 67.42. Butler and Fashant also ran, placing 20th and 21st respectively.
Men
Leading the way for them men was junior Jay Schroeder who took 7th in the pole vault at 4.41 m and freshman Bryce Siegel placing 8th in the high jump with 1.83 m.
Also placing in the pole vault was Eric Johnson and Josh Korczak who tied for twelfth with 4.11 meters.
The discus had two place winners, Drew Thomas who took fifth and Travis Shcultz placed eighth. In the javelin throw Patrick Delmore took seventh with 43.64 meters and Rusy Kjos and Thomas took 11th and 12th respectively.
In the track events, sophomore Brandon Uehran took 14th in the 200 meter dash and sophomore Dustin Umland took 15th in the 800 meter run.
Also running was sophomore Matt Elbert who took 25th in the 400 meter hurdles with 62.33.
Drake
The prestigious Drake Relays, which ran Wednesday through Saturday, had a couple standout Sioux athletes place high.
Leading the way was senior Matt Fick who took third in the javelin with a throw of 68.61 meters. Also placing high was senior Matt Litzinger who took 11th with 61.49 meters.
Fick and Litzinger still hold the top ranking in the DII javelin rankings.
Also competing on the men's side were sophomores Kyle Rosseau and Mark Barclay and seniors Brian Fransen and Kyle Downs who took 12th in the distance medley with a time of 10:26.85.
On the women's side senior Heidi Evans took 10th in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:29.22. Evans is currently ranked first in the 1500 in the DII rankings.
Next up for the team is the Ron Masanz Invite in Moorhead, Minn. this weekend, which is the last outdoor meet until the NCC meet in Sioux Falls, S.D.
