The DS View: Sustainability
The university takes steps to make the world a better place while educating students to do the same.
Since 1970, the annual celebration of Earth Day worldwide has forced concerns of an environmental nature to the forefront of public conscience. To-do lists are compiled and promises are made, whether out of guilt or genuine concern, and for at least one day green issues occupy a suitably large proportion of media and societal attention.
UND needs a student-run radio
During my undergraduate, I worked a short semester as a DJ for KSLU, the school radio station. It was pretty far gone at the time, and soon after it folded completely for a few years due to lack of funding for a slow breakage of equipment.
Recently, it's been revitalized by a determined group of students and is back on the air and on the web (albeit only on the campus itself due to copyright issue).
The ultimate untapped resource
I regret to say that on this campus, there are resources of which many students are not taking advantage. This is a real shame as those resources can help students achieve a higher success rate in class, leading to a better resume, and an eventually more successful career.
Being mindful of renewable energy
A riddle-poem: Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters, toothless bites, mouthless mutters.
Figure it out? The next sentence will be the answer, so skip ahead if you are obsessive-compulsive (the OC Disorder, as I call it.) Answer: The wind.
I'd like to start this article with a story about a couple that just got married and purchased their first home (with that new sub prime mortgage!)
It's a used house, but they love it.
Logic of waiting vs. the benefit of action
I've spent the last four years working my tail off to clean the English Coulee, not because I love the environment a whole lot, but because cleaning the environment is something I can do for the good of everybody in Grand Forks and UND.
Does that make me an environmentalist? Well, if it does, then it's only by accident.
Changing your lifestyle really counts
Obviously, everyone has heard about the huge issues going on with the environment, whether or not you believe it. I honestly, think a lot of things are beyond fixable and "green capitalism" and "green companies" are not going to fix it. Maybe "add time," but completely fix it?
No.
