"It is not the same thing as a UND ID card, and will not replace the ID, and it is not a credit card," said Heher.

If a student decides not to activate the card, it has no monetary value and can be activated free of charge at any time. However, if a student decides at a later date that they would like to activate the card and no longer have it, they must pay a replacement fee.

"We hope that students will keep the card in the case that they want to use it," said Lukach.

Students are still able to use direct deposit and paper checks to receive their excess aid.  Should a student not select their preferences, Higher One will attempt to contact them.

After 21 days, a paper check will be mailed to the student's home address.

Lukach said that students have had some input in the process. "Higher One came and presented to the Student Government and the Association for Residence Halls, and were well-received," he said.

Students that have any questions about Higher One are asked to call Student Account Services at 777-3911, or visit undpridecard.com.

What has gone unrevealed in all of this is how much UND is getting from the card company in consideration of granting it a monopoly on this service. $50K? $100K? $250K per year?

Yes, that was the intent. But the program was never fully switched over to direct deposit, because there were a fair number of students that didn't use that option. (Continued…)

The important point is that UND students need to be fully informed about fees -- either by the school or otherwise -- so they can make an intelligent choice. (Continued…)
