UND's Phi Beta Lambda attended a state leadership conference from April 3 through April 5 at the Doublewood Inn in Fargo, North Dakota.
Sara Folkestad, Public Relations coordinator for the Phi Beta Lambda business organization, said that the leadership conference happens each year. "It's kind of our pinnacle of the year. It's what we look forward to and is the main focus of our organization. It's good for our organization and UND to show how we compare to other schools."
The conference has individual, chapter and team events. Attendees participate in a variety of competitions that are business-related, such as Parliamentary Procedure, Business Decision Making and Management Concepts. The top two competitors in each event qualify for the national convention in the summer.
According to Folkestad, each type of event has different criteria. "There are some that are more of a presentation or a case study, where you have to present what you would do in that situation. Others are a 100-question test, but the most popular one is Accounting Principles."
Folkestad says that this year turned out well for Phi Beta Lambda. "Last year, we were expected to win and we lost, so this year we set out to win and dominate," she says. "We had someone in the top three in almost every event."
According to Folkestad, Phi Beta Lambda is an organization that brings business and education together. "We have innovative programs. We give students the opportunity to test their skills, whereas a lot of other business organizations on campus are networking." She says that the organization is also involved with community service and fundraising.
Phi Beta Lambda is open to all majors, Folkestad says. "We've had a lot of different people. We even had a physical therapy major, who placed in the Teach Your Business Teacher competition this year."
Folkestad says that Phi Beta Lambda has done well and won in previous years. "We won the Dorothy L. Travis Award in 2006, too. It's important to us because she was at UND for business and we kind of feel like that's where it belongs, so it's extra motivation to win it again."
