Letter: Campus gun control policy
Evan Trosvik
Issue date: 4/29/08 Section: Opinion
Up until I read Chief Czapiewski's comments in the "Decision to be made on firearm policies" article on April 25, I never knew the UND Police operated on a policy of "Shoot first, ask questions later."
The sole goal for concealed carry holders to carry a firearm is to offer a first line of defense for themselves and others against an attacker prior to UND Police's arrival.
When UND Police arrive, if the attacker is still on the offense, the CCW holder will leave the job to the police.
I don't think any CCW holder who would have their weapon drawn would turn it on a UND Police officer if they would charge in, nor disobey an order by them to drop that firearm.
What Czapiewski tries to use to instill fear of CCW on campus has not been a problem in common public CCW use, as police forces are trained to recognize CCW users in a situation like I described, and deal with them accordingly, not charge into an area and shoot anyone handling a firearm.
Is he suggesting that UND Police do not have the same training standards that other police forces have and, as I have said, would rather "Shoot first, ask questions later?"

I resent the fact that the Dakota student changed the title of my letter from "Response to Chief Czapiewski's Oppressive Views" to "Campus gun control policy"
My letter does not address the policy in any way. (Continued…)

Great article Evan. I thought the same thing when I read the original article.... they shoot at everyone with a gun? They might have some friendly fire problems. (Continued…)
