Staff Report
Issue date: 4/29/08 Section: Sports
Junior center fielder Casie Hanson hit a pair of home runs to become UND's all-time leader and lift the Sioux to an 18-8 victory over Valley City State Thursday at the VCSU Sports Complex. Game two of the doubleheader was canceled due to poor weather.
Hanson, who also drove in a career-high six runs, now has 22 career round-trippers, breaking Jennifer Soderquist's (2000-03) previous school record of 20.
Hanson's two home runs were among the season-high seven hit by the Sioux, who rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to pick up their fourth straight win.
UND's bats got rolling with a six-run fourth inning that included home runs by Hanson, senior third baseman Justine Wernick (Eagan, Minn.) and freshman designated player Hannah-Rose Peters (Santa Monica, Calif). The big inning put the Sioux on top 9-5.
The Sioux then put the game away with a nine-run explosion in the seventh inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Hanson and junior first baseman Nicole Puerling (Camarillo, Calif.), the team-leading 12th of the season for each.
In all, UND pounded VCSU pitchers Krystal Hathaway and Karisa Etter for 14 hits, including 11 off of losing pitcher Hathaway.
Freshman Karli Fisher (Castle Rock, Colo.) earned the win for the Sioux, going five innings and giving up six runs - five earned - while striking out a career-high six.
Sophomore Alicia Pearce (Maple Grove, Minn.) relieved Fisher in the sixth and earned the save.
Hanson finished her record-setting day 4-for-6 and scored three times. The St. Peter, Minn., native also joined Holly Bonk (1999-02) as the only two players in program history with 200 career hits. Hanson, who has 201 hits, needs 10 more to surpass Bonk as the school's all-time hits leader.
The Sioux, now 18-31 overall, wrapped up the regular season on Saturday and Sunday at the MSU Microtel Inn and Suites Classic in Mankato, Minn.
Notes: UND has now hit 58 home runs this season, tying the 58 hit by North Dakota State in 2003 for the most ever hit by a North Central Conference team (all games). UND's 58 home runs also double the previous school record of 29 home runs hit last season.
